MitchelLake Digital Industry Survey Results

19 June 2009

Some interesting results from our 3rd Industry Survey - Topic is 'the take up and perceptions of social media'

Thanks to everyone who participated in our survey, we had an increased number of participants (375) which indicates an ongoing interest in understanding how our market is travelling, as well as an interest in statistics around current trends such as social media. Below are our key findings;

The first graph shows an interesting correlation between our February and June results, with a clear indication that most businesses are expecting towards 5-10% business growth in the next 12 months. It seems business sentiment has picked up somewhat with over 25% of respondants indicating in our February survey that they did not foresee any positive growth in their business for the next 12 months.

It is clear from our findings below that the majority of businesses are looking to cut costs in the areas of travel and recruitment, with 19.5% of respondants indicating there will be no cost cuts across their business in the next 3 months.

An encouraging sign when looking at employee retention figures, with 73% of respondants not expecting to see employee numbers reduce in the next 6 months.

Professional networking site LinkedIn turned out to be the clear leader when looking at use of various social media/networking platforms, with close to 80% of participants indicating they used LinkedIn. An interesting finding when compared with sites primarily used for social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace.

76.5% of us are using social media networks more frequently than once a week, with the majority of us engaging with social media on a daily or weekly basis. It seems 6.2% of us have not embraced the social media space and have never used a social media network.

Can social media tools be leveraged for business use?  A topical question with some interesting results - close to 30% of respondants indicating they believe social media is useful for business.

A fairly even opinion as per the graph below, it seems the majority of respondants believe that social media has had some sort of impact on the integrity of online journalism, whether negative positive.

Social media is proving to be an important platform for facilitating moves within our industry with over 72% of participants having  leveraged social media for job seeking opportunities themselves or known someone who has.
