Digital Trends Market Survey - June 2010
09 June 2010
Checking the pulse on digital business to see whats trending in new and convergent markets
MitchelLake is pleased to present the findings from our 6th quarterly industry survey. In the last survey we compared results from the previous four quarters across the industry. This quarter we wanted to address the fastest trending device in history - Apples iPad – will you be buying one? Will you be using it for business or personal use? Also very interesting to look at how many of us are considering a career move in 2010 – it certainly feels like the year of change for many!
Thanks to everyone who participated in our survey, we have again had a great response rate indicating continued interest, which is fantastic! We’d love any feedback you may have on how we can continue to improve and evolve the survey, and are always open to suggestions on hot topics you’d like us to explore on your behalf.
Here are the key findings from the survey:
42% of respondents to this quarter’s survey indicated that they expect to see business growth of 10%+ in the next 12 months, it seems the market has well and truly picked up and is on its way to be being back on its feet! Following on from this we found that 52% are expecting increased headcount and a further 36% looking to retain the current headcount within the business.

Social media – mixed feelings in this arena this time around, a fairly even split on whether we will see a significant increase in social media spend, and whether it will be a top priority for marketers in 2010. So what are the areas of growth for our industry? Looks like mobile applications and content is where we expect to see the most growth, closely followed by cloud computing and web services.

The iPad finally landed in Australia on May 28th, with early adopters and enthusiasts alike lining George Street in the wee hours to get into Apple’s flagship store first. TNT reported massive delays as their couriers struggled to keep up with the demand of pre-ordered units! The ML survey results tell us that 26% of us have committed to buying the first generation iPad, with another 19% still undecided as to whether invest or not. Our results also indicate that the iPad is seen as a hybrid business tool/personal gadget – 40% of respondents indicating it will be used for both work and play.

2010 – the year of change? Exactly 50% of us have been approached by a headhunter in the last 3 months, while 56% of are considering a career move this year.

Again thanks to everyone who took the time to complete this quarterly survey. Each quarter the Digital Industry Survey is completed by a niche audience across our Australian and U.S networks including senior executives, business owners, specialists, entrepreneurs and investors in the technology, online & mobile related industries.
